SUSTAINABLE TOURIST PACKAGE TO FACE THE DECLINE OF THE TOURISM DEMAND IN GRAUS (HUESCA), SPAIN

Within the SusTowns project, in collaboration with FAMCP, the municipality of Griegos developed a tourist package which consists of discovering the black truffle cycle, from picking truffles directly from the field, accompanying the truffle hunter and his dogs, to enjoying the truffle collected in an authentic truffle lunch, visiting the truffle market in the square of Graus and, of course, enjoy a spectacular truffle dinner.

Graus is the historical capital of the black truffle, with the first truffle market in Aragon and one of the first in Spain in 1947. It has been a reference market for a long time, until the 1980s. Its target market has always been the main professionals of the most important companies dedicated to exporting or processing for packaging.

Nowadays, the Association of Truffle Farmers and Collectors of Aragon organizes the truffle market, both fresh and retail, on Saturdays throughout the truffle season in the Graus main square.

The market is the perfect occasion for people to get to know the tuber melanosporum vitt, its aroma and the good quality of the product of this area.

Taking advantage of this unique truffle market, visitors are offered a complete tourist package "Black truffle: discover the hidden treasure" in which they can live the complete cycle, from picking truffles directly from the field, accompanying the truffle hunter and his dogs, to enjoying the truffle collected in an authentic truffle lunch, visiting the truffle market at the incomparable setting of the square of Graus, where you can buy truffles and taste "tapas" made by different restaurants and, of course, enjoy a spectacular truffle dinner.

As if this was not enough, the whole truffle experience is accompanied by the possibility of going on historical walks, visiting the museums and monuments of the town, buying the typical sausage “longaniza” in the famous butchers' shops, visiting the Buddhist monastery of Panillo or the cathedral of Rosa de Isábena, etc., which makes for a complete package that can be adapted to the preferences of each client.

The package includes:

●      A typical truffle discovery weekend package including:

Friday

●      Reception at the accommodation and light dinner after the trip

Saturday

●      Breakfast and visit to the truffle farm with truffle hunting demonstration, together with the truffle farmer and his dogs;

●      Homemade truffled food;

●      Tourist walk and truffle market in Graus, where you can taste truffled tapas and buy truffles at retail;

●      Truffle tasting dinner.

Sunday

●      Breakfast and tourist visit to Roda de Isábena;

●      Lunch at the cathedral cloister;

●       Return

The package fits perfectly with the type of tourism that the Local Sustainable Tourism Plan seeks, a quiet tourist, who enjoys the town, its activities, its monuments... and who also consumes in its stores and uses its services.

It is a tourist who comes to enjoy nature and see how truffles are collected, who is not looking for a busy schedule, but wants to enjoy the town quietly, do their shopping and above all, the gastronomic experience around the truffle.

This experience is open to local inhabitants, as well as to owners of second residences and tourists, thus achieving the interaction of all of them in each of the weekends of the truffle season.

Making Graus the truffle capital is a way of recovering traditional tourism and positioning the town as the Heart of the Pyrenees, the perfect base of operations to get to know the area and, above all, to give it that differential touch that a destination needs.
