The INTERREG MED “COASTING+” project and the Integrated Governance of Sustainable and Responsible Coastal Tourism in MED area

ANATOLIKI S.A., project partner of the INTERREG MED “SUSTOWNS” project, is participating in the INTERREG MED “COASTING+”. COASTING+ aims at capitalizing the experience of a multilevel governance tool (Coast Contract) and producing a common Methodology for establishing a multi-sectorial and multi-stakeholder participatory process, leading to the signature of an agreement through which public/private actors commit to implement a shared strategy.

Nowadays, the whole Mediterranean coastline faces similar environmental (e.g. climate change, coastal erosion) and anthropogenic issues (e.g. intense urbanization, mass tourism, pollution, waste). Due to these criticalities, an emerging paradox is that areas once considered an economic resource for tourism, are at risk of becoming unattractive due to the degradation of their natural resources.

The COASTING+ project, in line with the objectives of promoting sustainability and adaptation to climate change, of strengthening socio-economic and territorial cohesion, and of promoting good multilevel governance for the sustainable development of territories, it builds upon the promotion of the application of a common Methodology for integrated governance of sustainable and responsible coastal tourism in the Mediterranean Area.

In Greece, the pilot territory where the Methodology of the project will be implemented, is the island of Ammouliani, Municipality of Aristotle, Central Macedonia. Ammouliani is the only inhabited island of Central Macedonia and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Northern Greece.
